Mrs. Lawson’s Classroom News April 12, 2013 753-5022 Stacey.lawson@murray.kyschools.us In the Classroom: For the week of: April 15-19 Phonics: Our letter for the week is Diagraph th Reading: Seeds is our story in Core Reading and Hardback Readers in Flex Math: 3-D Shapes, addition, subtraction, ordinal numbers, measurement MSU Practicum students will be providing math activities on Tuesday and Thursday this week Theme: Plants We introduced plants with the MSU students today and we will build on this theme next week. We will be talking about the parts of flowers and what plants need to live and grow. We hope to also make a watermelon life cycle wheel. Home Connections: I hope everyone had a restful and joyful Spring Break. We had a great week back. The students came back ready to go. Their behavior was excellent and their work awesome. Some upcoming dates and events: Q and U wedding- date to come later MAP Testing: April 25 and 29 Preschool/ Head Start Visit: May 2 Share a Seed Field Trip: May 3 AIMS testing: First week of May Play Day: May 15 Graduation: date to be announced I hope to hear about our Silent Auction money this week. I am hoping to cover some of the expenses for the field trip in May. We may have to collect money to cover shirts, lunch, and transportation to the park. I will let you know as soon as I know. Mrs. Lawson’s Classroom News March 29, 2013 753-5022 Stacey.lawson@murray.kyschools.us In the Classroom: No School 4/1-5 For the week of: April 8-13 Phonics: Our letter for the week is Diagraph sh Reading: Spring Stories in Core Reading and Hardback Readers in Flex Math: Clocks and Addition MSU Practicum students will be providing math activities on Tuesday and Thursday this week Theme: Spring Home Connections: Our Easter Egg Hunt was a lot of fun this year. We enjoyed making all of our Easter crafts in class. The students are working hard and improving so much each week. We will be testing for the MAP test again at the end of April and the AIMS test at the beginning of May. MAP testing will be April 22nd and 24th. We have lots of fun activities planned for the rest of the year. MSU Students will be coming to MES to teach students about plants on April 12th. We will walk to Pullen Farm for a couple activities. Please sign and return permission form to walk to the Pullen Farm. Reminders ** Snacks – We are OUT of snacks. I need everyone to send in snacks for April. We have 21 students in our class. A special thanks to Shannon and Justin Roberts and Justin’s friend for putting together an awesome maze. Thanks for the collecting boxes and also taking them back when we were done. You guys made the set up a breeze. A special thank you to all my parents who came to let me brag on their child at the Parent Teacher Conference. Mrs. Lawson’s Classroom News March 15, 2013 753-5022 Stacey.lawson@murray.kyschools.us In the Classroom: For the week of: March 18-22 NO SCHOOL March 22 PD for teachers Phonics: Our letter for the week is Uu Reading: Max takes the Train Math: Addition, Subtraction, How many, and patterns. We will also be doing domino addition. Theme: Transportation- we will learn the names of various types of transportation, we will be able to sort transportation into land, water, and air travel, and we will be creating a mini book about transportation. Home Connections: Spring Swing is TONIGHT March 15th from 5:30-7:30 YOU DO NOT WANT TO MISS. We will have a great time with games, food, and fun. Our basket looks great. Thank you for your donations. I hope you are a lucky winner of a basket if you bought raffle tickets for one. A special thanks to those that came and helped work our class activity: THE MAZE. It is a lot of work but worth it. The kids have a blast in it. I want to give a big THANK YOU to Brittany Farr for being our room PTO mom and keeping everything organized. We will have items in the silent auction. Spring Swing is our Spring Carnival Fundraiser This is one of the most exciting activities at MES. We have games, food, auctions, and fun. Our basket looks great. Our PTO rep has outdone herself. Thank you so much Brittany. Thanks to everyone who has sent in items and helped get them ready. Raffle tickets will be on sale soon. There are some amazing baskets! Spring Swing is our Spring Carnival Fundraiser This is one of the most exciting activities at MES. We have games, food, auctions, and fun. The baskets are always awesome and will be on display the week of the program. I hope everyone can attend. The money raised from the auction will go back into my classroom. I am hoping to make enough money to buy our end of the year shirt and not have to ask for money. Our class activity will be the MAZE. Please return the note from PTO rep about working the maze. If you plan to donate for our basket please turn in those items by Monday. Thank you so much. One of our auction items is a large poster of our lass making the ABC’s. Mrs. Lawson’s Classroom News February 15, 2013 753-5022 Stacey.lawson@murray.kyschools.us In the Classroom: For the week of: Feb. 25-March 1 Phonics: Our letter for the week is Jj Reading: In whole group reading we will be reading Dr. Seuss Books. Math: We will work on addition and measurement. New vocabulary will be sums. Continue to work on the names and values of coins. Theme: In the Sky- Earth and the planets Help Needed: Spring Swing is March 15th from 5:30-7:30. Spring Swing is our Spring Carnival Fundraiser where we have fun games in the classrooms, food in the cafeteria, silent auctions in the Library, and we raffle off theme baskets. These always look great. Our class activity will be the MAZE. We need large refrigerator boxes donated to construct the maze in my classroom. We also need rolls of duct tape donated. We will need volunteers to help construct the maze and work the maze in 30 minute intervals that night. Our class will be collecting items for a movie basket. Items may include movies, movie money, Red Box codes for movies, popcorn, and candy. Anything else you can think of will be appreciated. You can start sending in these items. THANK YOU Reminders **Send a winter coat each day. 753-5022 Stacey.lawson@murray.kyschools.us In the Classroom: For the week of: Jan 21-25 NO SCHOOL MONDAY the 21st Phonics: Our letter for the week is “Hh” Reading: Please continue to work with your child each night in their reading folder. It has been made just for his/her level. Math: We will have lots of activities with the number 100, grouping into groups of 10, addition, and tally marks. Theme: Martin Luther King and 100th Day of School Home Connections: This week we got to experience some true winter COLD. We were sad to have to stay in for recess. It has to be above freezing to go outside. Flu season is upon us, and we are trying our best to prevent illness in our room. We are being vigilant about washing hands and covering our coughs. We are sanitizing our desks each day and are going through the sanitizing wipes. We are reminding them to wash their hands as much as possible to eliminate spreading of germs If you could send in a container to help keep our class healthy, it would be appreciated!!! Reminders **Send a winter coat each day. We will go outside if above freezing. **Thanks for the glue sticks. I have ordered more and hopefully they will be in soon. If your child is ill, please keep them home until they are fever free for 24 hours. Mrs. Lawson's Class News

This week was really fast. The students continue to review the guidelines and rules. They were very hard workers this week. We had fun incorporating math and reading with our snowman and mitten themes. I hope they told you the mitten story as they showed you the animals that climbed inside. We did a lot of addition activities this week. Next week we will concentrate on polar animals (penguin and polar bear). We will be looking at nonfiction text to research about these animals. We will be working in math with tally marks and tens frames. We will also be doing addition and subtraction. I reading we will continue to sound out CVC words and rhyming. In writing we will use our 4 square to produce another writing piece. Report cards went home today. If you would like to meet, please fill out the attached sheet and I will contact you to make an appointment. We will be MAP testing on Tuesday and Friday mornings next week. Make sure your child gets rest and eats a good breakfast so he/she can do their best on the test. ***Reading Folders and Books will come home on Monday. I have changed the direction sheets. Please review your new homework requirements. I have added a Sight Word Booklet to some folders and others have a set of cards in the tile pocket to review. These new plans are very specific to your child’s reading needs. I am hoping to challenge the students as we move into the next semester. **Please remember to dress your child appropriately in the upcoming cool months. Put their initials in all coat labels. Also please send a winter change of clothes to keep at school in case of an accident. **Remember to send in snacks for January. Thank you for the glue sticks!!!! *** Make sure your child wears a WINTER coat to school each day. HAPPY NEW YEAR!! We have had a great start to the second half of the year. The students were really excited to share about their Christmas break. I enjoyed hearing about their favorite gifts. I hope each of your families had a great time together. This week we reviewed the rules and expectations each day. We are working on seeing who can get the most “pawsitive” tallies for making smart choices and following guidelines and rules. We each made a resolution for the 2013 year. We worked on addition, counting to 100 by 10’s, blends, and vowel sounds. We made some winter decorations for our classroom. Our theme for the following three weeks will be “Winter”. We will incorporate math and literature with winter, snowman, mittens, and Artic animals. We should have lots of fun with our learning. Friday the 11th we will meet our new student teacher.
